- The Republic of Malta is an island country in Southern Europe. It lies in the Mediterranean Sea, south of the Italian island of Sicily (less than 100 km) across the Malta Channel. It joins European Union and is one of the smallest countries in the world. Malta is member of Commonwealth, because it was part of British Empire from 1814 to 1964, year of its independence.
