- The Gold Coast was a British colony on the Gulf of Guinea in west Africa; it coincides with today's country of Ghana. It derived its name from the rich gold veins present on its territory. In 1956 British Togoland was merged with the Gold Coast to create one colony and in 1957 the colony gained independence under the name of Ghana.
