- The state of Qatar is a sovereign country located in a small peninsula in the bigger Arabian Peninsula. It borders with Saudi Arabia to the south. During the 20th century Qatar became a British protectorate until 1971, when it gained independence. Qatar is a hereditary constitutional monarchy held by Al Thani royal family, that rules the country since 1825.
