The Republic of Latvia is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is bordered by Estonia to the North, Lithuania and Belarus to the South, Russia to East.
Latvia was part of the Russian Empire until 1918; after the World War I it became indipendent as Republic of Latvia. But at the beginning of the World War II the country was incorporated into the Soviet Union. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Latvia gained its independence again, during 1991.
In 2004 it joined European Union and in January 2014 its currency, the Latvian lats, was replaced by the euro.
